I admit, I’ve seen this idea all over Pinterest, and all though it is a slightly over done, I found these knobs at a shop in Boulder and knew I had to include them in my home décor somewhere. I chose a blue, white and then an off red for my palate, but I think anything with different colorful knobs would look awesome.

I didn’t even photograph this with my jewelry hanging on it because after I was done I wondered if that was the best use for it; you could use it for scarves and keys at the door or even a kitchen accent piece for your apron, etc. However my jewelry organization is a constant problem on my dresser right now so I think I will have to stick to its original intent.

The tool pictured here is an awesome one. I never really thought I would be the kind of girl who has her own tool set, but one has started. My dad gave me this when I was home for Christmas and it’s a great little thing. You can find it at Home Depot for around 10 dollars, and I thought it was crucial here for cutting all the screws on the knobs in order to make them the same length, and therefore much easier to hang.

A little off the subject, but I wanted to share I did yoga two days in a row, so that’s the New Years resolution going steady! One of my best friends is going to Thailand in February to become a certified instructor, so for my pride and body’s sake, I’m trying to perfect my skills so I don’t embarrass her when I tend her class!

Send me some links to your blog if you had made this or post any color options you would like to try! This is a fun project and easy with the right tools!

DIY: Framed Vintage Post Cards

When I was home in Boulder, CO this past September, I got to do everything I wanted to do. When does that ever happen? I got to see my two best friends, not only separate but together (first time in almost two years)! I got to go camping and see the fall foliage start to change, spent lots of time with my family and had some great meals with friends. Perfection.

Elena, one of the two besties, has always been so artistic and has great ideas. We went to this antique shop on Pearl Street and it was filled with treasures and a lot of Colorado history. They had stacks and stacks of post cards from the 60’s and 70’s that pictured Colorado scenery, which if you don’t know has some of the most beautiful mountains and open space in the world. When Elena saw them, she shared how they would look so good framed on a wall.

post cards

Some of the post cards actually had writing on them as well! I love vintage things like this, something that at one point cost 5 cents. It’s like holding a piece of the past; looking at something someone bought to share his or her adventures with a friend.

Every place called home has it’s own special something that holds a fond spot in our hearts, and old photographs can remind of us of a different time in those places.

I chose the barn wood frames because it highlights the rustic characteristic of the post cards. For an extra step, you could paint them any color and then distress the paint to make the frames look older as well. I really love this idea, and every time I look at them I’m reminded of home.

Super personalized and unique, love this idea!

DIY: Styled Bamboo Utensils

I love to have stylish kitchenware and utensils, but sometimes what I like is either an idea in my head I can’t seem to find anywhere, or something I found in the wrong colors. I saw these great utensils from West Elm during some holiday sale shopping and thought they were so cute! However I prefer a more coastal color pallet. If you do buy your own, make sure to get bamboo over wood so they don’t splinter. I found a pack of utensils I liked and thought, I can paint them myself!

I think you could actually do this with anything wood/bamboo, like a serving platter or other decorative ware, just as long as the paint doesn’t actually touch the food. I was able to find a small wheel of acrylic paints, which was perfect for this project because I didn’t need that much paint; they can get expensive if you want several colors. I did buy a full size white color knowing I would want a pastel pallet, which has proven worthy for other projects as well.

If you’re all set for utensils in your own kitchen, these would make a great gift for the holidays and has that homemade feel that always makes that person feel special. Plus it’s very budget friendly!

I used craft’s tape that I put four inches up the handle, but you could paint it as high as you wanted. I suggest Michaels for most of your craft supplies and painting needs, plus they almost always have a coupon, so check their website before you go!

Let me know what colors you chose or what else you personalized with acrylic paints!

Deck the Halls and Make Pom Pom Balls

Yesterday was about Turkey, but because of how much I love Christmas spirit, Its time to move right along!

My mom always made the holidays so very special for us growing up. The decorations from previous years were brought out to use and rekindle memories, but there were also new ones we could start to associate with this time of year. Those memories are honestly some of my favorite from growing up. So now that I have my own apartment and I’m away from home, I have found myself going to the distance, bringing that spirit alive this year!

When my parents got their first tree back in 1975 or so, they started a tradition of saving that little stump you cut off the bottom of the tree, so it can drink lots of water and wrote the year on it. Growing up, they got out the collection each year. It was so surreal to hold a piece of their tree before I was born and think about the happy times they shared around it.

Shane and I got our first tree together yesterday (yes, they have fresh trees to buy in Boston!) and I asked the man tying up the tree if I could save my little stub. I’m so excited to start this tradition, so each year we can get out the tree pieces and reflect on past Christmases, sharing our favorite memories and funny stories.

I’m not sure why, but this year I wanted to make my very own homemade wreath. I wanted a retro-rustic looking one, and to me that meant something with pom poms.

When I found this idea from Urban Outfitters Blog, I got really excited.

Fair warning, the poms were a little harder than I thought, and I used a lot more yarn that the instructions, but that’s why mine is a little puffier also. The birds were my special touch, I thought it looked whimsical or something. ;)

Try it out, I think its worth it and so cool to add your own touch to holiday décor!
